PROJECTS

Prerana's thrust area is Intergrated Community Development - which, stripped of jargon, means enabling a community to become self-sufficient and self-developing.

Professional volunteerism and non-charity are the backbone of all our projects - the objective being to help a community help itself.

Integrated Community Development, our primary focus, has been targetted by implementing a number of successful sub-programmes:

  • The Better Life Options Programme
  • Project on Preventive AIDS education in Delhi schools
  • Integrated Community Based Health Projects
  • Fellowship Programmes
  • Research and Documentation
  • Networking

    THE BETTER LIFE OPTIONS PROGRAMME

Realising that adolescents today would be playing a major role in shaping the future of a community, Prerana has been engaged in designing and implementing programmes in the area of adolescent development.
The Better Life Options Programme was begun with CEDPA since 1991. The programme is catering to six villages in the Badarpur area of New Delhi. The beneficiaries under this programme are young girls, boys and women in the age group of 12-20 years.

The programme focuses on providing an enabling environment of dignity and opportunities whereby these beneficiaries can harness their full potential and contribute positively and effectively towards their family, community and society at large.
The success of this long-term programme begun a decade ago is evident now..

  • Recent Developments - The Better Life Options Project in 2001

  • The background, the core issues and action plan - The Conference on Expanding Partnerships - A report on the conference on adolescent issues which analysed - in-depth - the problems facing the adolescent population in India. Participants in the conference came from all fields - NGO's, government agencies, media persons, corporate sector companies and donor agencies.

  • A Call to Action - The resolution adopted at the end of the above conference which outlined the action plan for tackling the adolescent issue. A Call to Action is the guiding reference for most agencies working in the field of adolescent welfare.

  • [Tailoring classes - Better Life Options Programme for Girls.]
Prerana volunteers conducted these workshops for the first few years.
The teaching centres are mostly self-sustaining now! Many girls who participated and learnt a skill from these workshops then are now teaching others to earn a living.
